The Professional Standards for BC Educators serve as accountability for BC educators. Teachers have a lot of freedom to teach what they want how they want. The professional standards along with the BC curriculum give teachers a framework to work within. The legalities of the standards protect schools and student from rogue teachers being allowed to continue teaching when they should not be. The standards remind me of the law. Its good to have freedom, but a lot of the time its common sense to be doing the right thing. I feel that the teachers who care, and want to be teachers will naturally be following the standards, whereas borderline teachers may not naturally be doing the right things. The good news is that, being a good teacher can be taught. It is easier if that who you are, but I believe learning to teach well is something that can be learned.
